Population Differences & Meeting Student Expectations

Optimizing success outcomes for Student Populations

How do we identify areas of opportunity for different student groups?

Each fall, schools involved with Credo’s Moving the Needle (MTN) participate in a survey of undergraduates that asks them about the culture of the institutions and quality of specific support services. Past research has shown that the earliest predictor of a student planning not to return the following fall related to meeting and exceeding their expectations.

Implications of This ResearcH

Some of the key findings include:

  • Incoming students are less likely to have expectations met than transfer students, but returning students who originally matriculated as FTFT students are more likely to continue.
  • Residential students are significantly less likely to have their expectations met for both new and returning students, making it valuable to examine the residential experience.
  • New student athletes and first-generation students score less well on the Expectations Scale, but these differences evaporate for returning athletes and first-generation students.
